Every year, millions of parents and teachers sit down at the same table to make decisions about a child receiving special education services and/or accomodations to make learning accessible — and walk away with completely different understandings of what just happened. Every procedure was followed. Nothing technically went wrong. And still, both sides leave feeling unheard and further apart than when they arrived.

I’ve sat in that room as a special education teacher. I’ve sat there as an advocate. And I’ve sat there as a mother, on the hardest side of the table, fighting for my own child.

From every seat, I kept seeing the same thing: the breakdown is almost never about the law or the resources. It’s about the phone call that never happened. The concern nobody said out loud. The parent who didn’t know what to ask. The teacher who didn’t know how to say what she was seeing.

So I wrote the book I wish we’d all had — one that speaks to parents and teachers, at the same time, on purpose. Real stories from real meetings, paired with strategies you can use at your very next ARD.
